Dear Gheorghe,
I am reaching out to share some concerning developments in cancer research funding and the urgent actions the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) is taking to ensure the sustainability of our future researchers.he National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been instrumental in advancing medical research, leading to breakthroughs in cancer treatments that have saved countless lives. However, recently proposed funding cuts have created an atmosphere of uncertainty, particularly affecting early career scientists—the very individuals whose innovative research propels us forward. Our Scientific Advisory Council is sounding the alarm regarding the detrimental impact these cuts could have on the future of cancer research. They strongly believe these funding interruptions are jeopardizing the next generation of scientists, who are critical to driving a new wave of curative immunotherapies.
In response to this crisis, I am proud to share that we are committing an additional $2.5 million from our reserve fund to support 10 additional postdoctoral fellowships over the next year. This initiative represents a 30% increase in our planned funding and directly supports early career scientists, ensuring that we continue fostering a new generation of cancer researchers.
